Maybe Good

"Irene!" Annie said. "I heard you met a really nice guy. His name is Robert, right?"

"Yes, it is," Irene said. "He's gorgeous, he has a great-paying job at Microsoft, and he's really good to me."

"That's good. I'm happy for you."

"Maybe good. Maybe bad. Sometimes you just can't tell."

"Irene!" Annie said. "I heard you had to quit your job and go on Social Security Disability."

"You're right," Irene said. "I caught Robert cheating on me. Did you know I have bipolar disorder? I couldn't take the stress. I had a breakdown and had to go on Social Security."

"That is so bad," Annie said.

"Maybe bad. Maybe good. Sometimes you just can't tell."

"Irene!" Annie said. "I heard you're making lots of money now."

"Yes I am," Irene said. "Being on Social Security meant that I didn't have to spend all day doing pointless jobs just to survive. I had time to study and become a computer programmer. I work for an internet corporation now."

"That's good," Annie said.

"Maybe good. Maybe bad. Sometimes you just can't tell."

"Irene!" Annie said. "I heard you're broke now."

"Yes," Irene said. "The corporation I was working for went out of business. I'm back in the poorhouse again."

"That is so bad," Annie said.

"Maybe bad. Maybe good. Sometimes you just can't tell."

"Irene!" Annie said. "I heard you're back on your feet again, financially speaking."

"Yes I am," Irene said. "I filed for bankruptcy, so I got out of paying thousands of dollars in debts. And now I have a new job as a manager at Microsoft."

"That's good."

"Maybe good. Maybe bad. Sometimes you just can't tell.

"But you should have seen the look on Robert's face when he found out I was his new boss."
